Preseason Week 3: "It's encouraging to me after last week, because we didn't play real hard last week." -- Coach Mike Holmgren

Seattle 12 - St. Louis 23

I'll say this for the game: The St. Louis fans were accommodating.

About a week before the game, I was offered tickets in the Club Level. I had originally planned to go to the game since this was the big annual bash for the Mid West Sea Hawkers, however due to a number of extenuating circumstances I backed out. When these tickets landed in my lap out of nowhere a week before the game, I decided it was something that was meant to be! We loaded up and headed to St. Louis for the weekend!

Of course by now we all know that the Seahawks came out in pre-season form. Don't ask me how that can happen on Week 9 but it happened. I can't begin to explain what I saw as our defense took the field and allowed the Rams to score at will. Midway through the first quarter I was still waiting for my first opportunity to cheer. It was getting so bad that I was just hopeful that at least once I'd get to jump to my feet and scream for our boys!

Shaun Alexander gave me that opportunity finally, and repeated it many times! One of those times I was the sole fan in my section on my feet, jumping up and down as Shaun was headed to the end zone, just sure this was finally where the tide would turn and the mighty, mighty Seahawks would make their climb to the top!

And then he fumbled.

And the Rams recovered.

And I slumped down in my cushy, Club Level seat, while the Rams fans behind me jumped and hollered and high-fived each other.

I haven't been able to watch the replay on television so I'm not sure whether or not they showed Holmgren hopping mad, literally, with fists flying in the air on the sidelines. I caught Dilfer at it as well, and then in the spirit of the team, I had to do likewise! I couldn't believe the red flag wasn't thrown on the Darrell Jackson sidelines catch. From my vantage point it looked like a catch, and from the still photos I've seen in on-line newspapers, it looked like a catch. Maybe those of you who watched on television saw something different but I couldn't believe Holmgren didn't throw the red flag.

Despite the outcome of the game, I had a lot of fun. The Rams fans are so much, uh, fan-ier than they used to be. Lots of hollering, lots of jerseys, lots of spirit. At the start of the game I thought the comments directed at me and my family, all of whom were wearing Seahawks jerseys, was a little pointed. In an effort to make peace, I turned around to the fellas behind me between plays and asked them, with a smile, if they could be just a little quieter as our quarterback was having a little trouble calling plays. They laughed (thank goodness) and it seemed to break the ice. They still ribbed us throughout the game but it didn't feel as mean-spirited.

I do want to mention the officiating. The Rams fans were not pleased with the way the calls went. After Orlando Pace was ejected from the game for running into an official during a brawl, a loud chorus of boos resonated throughout the stadium for quite some time. Had the Seahawks finally done something we might have had a near riot on our hands. Otherwise we didn't have any trouble with the fans, and some went as far as to offer high fives as we were leaving the stadium.

(more coming soon...!)

As always, your comments are welcome! Send them to me and I'll post them here!
