The Road from the Past:
Traveling through History in France
by Ina Caro

Overview
From the Publisher
In this delightful blend of information, history, and opinion, Ina Caro gives us a four-dimensional tour of France. With inimitable insights and an informed sensibility cultivated from study and numerous visits to France, she takes us to where history unfolds--and then to a favorite spot for a picnic or five-course meal.

My thoughts
This is an absolutely wonderful book if you dream of traveling through France. Ina Caro shows us how we can travel through France to see a timeline of history. When I make that trek myself, I will have this book in my hand, guaranteed!

Note from Becky
All books with a read date prior to fall 2003 were not added to this website at the time I read the books; rather they were added in late 2005 as I organized my home library. For that reason, the reviews are less substantial than the reviews of the books I have more recently read. That does not mean that the older books were less enjoyable; only that a lot of time has passed since I first read them and I haven't taken the time to go back and review the books. Perhaps in time that will come.

Favorite Passage
As for France's beloved eldest son, who stood between Catherine and the throne of France, his death was caused not by poison but by ice water. (The French, of course, are acutely aware of the dangerous properties of ice water, as any American knows who has attempted to ask a French waiter for a glass.)

Reading Level
Difficult read
I loved this book even though it was difficult at times. It has a lot of geographical references, a lot of French vocabulary, a lot of historical references -- those are the things that slow me down! Please don't let my opinion keep you from reading the book though. It's sensational!
