Spirit of 1976!

"Five balls today!" Kitna shouted over reporters. "A career high!"

"Six, knucklehead," quipped Fauria with a smirk.

-- As reported in the Seattle Times

"He caught the ball more today than he has all season. Those weren't easy catches, either, some of them. He really kept us going."

-- Seattle Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren, referring to Christian Fauria

Seahawks 23 - Chiefs 14

Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!

Perhaps my best Christmas present came a day late when the Seahawks gave us a season sweep of the Chiefs!!! THANK YOU SEAHAWKS!!!! Wa hoo!!!!!

THIS ... is the Seahawk team we saw earlier in the season when we were winning games!!! Where have these boys been?! They went into seclusion for four long weeks...but today they were back!!! WHAT A FEELING!!!

I apologize for posting this game report so late but I got caught up in the Christmas holiday rush. By now those of you who wanted to know the details of the game have read it somewhere else, so instead of telling you about the game, let me tell you about the day. This is a story for all of you who live and die football...

Late Sunday morning I met up with my sister-in-law Linda, my niece Laura, and my niece's boyfriend Darren, all from the St. Louis, Missouri area. We decided to walk off the extra pounds that Christmas always seems to bring. It was a very mild winter day in Kansas, the kind beckons you outdoors for the freshness of air that is so hard to find when it's cold, snowing, and you're cooped up indoors. We took a long walk and we had a nice time catching up on family things that we'd missed out on throughout the year.

Somewhere along the way, between Bogey's, the local ice cream shop, and Kansas Wesleyan University we started talking about game day. Linda was looking forward to watching the game with us...that's when I told her that we wouldn't be coming over to Grandma's for the game. We'd be watching from home.

She was surprised! Knowing how all of us love football, why wouldn't we want to watch the game together over the Christmas holiday?

My mother-in-law is an avid Chiefs fan. My brother-in-law is a season ticket holder at Arrowhead. Let's face it, this game was among the biggest games either team would play thus far this season. If the Chiefs were to win, they would win the division and the Seahawks would be out of the playoff picture. If the Seahawks were to win, not only our playoff hopes remain alive but our opportunity to win the division also remained alive.

We all wanted to win so desperately. But only one team would.

We are all passionate about our team. Grandma and Mike about the Chiefs. Linda and her family about the Rams. My family about the Seahawks. We can't not cheer when something good happens to our team. We can't hide the smiles on our faces when the other team throws an interception or fumbles the ball. No matter how polite we try to be, our passion spills over as we pace during a field goal attempt, wring our hands while we're waiting for the commercials to get over, tense every muscle in our body as we lean forward to give Ricky Watters that little extra armchair push that just might get him the first down.

Someone wasn't going to be happy with the outcome of the game...someone we care a lot about. At Christmas time.

That's football.

I was very humble going into the game...nothing like four bad weeks to remind you that it's not a good idea to count your chickens before they're hatched! The Seahawks came onto the field fired up! I dared not let my hopes go soaring but the Seahawks came through with big plays again and again and again and I found myself caught up in the greatest of Seahawk spirit!! There was a lot of cheering going on in this house!!

And quite the opposite in another home just a few blocks away.

Been there.

Christian Fauria had a brilliant day! Sean Dawkins caught some sensational catches! Ricky Watters had some nice runs right up to the time he was injured. Chris Canty, in his first game back from injury, was spectacular! DAR-RYL Williams got a terrific interception after he juggled the ball, bobbled it, bobbled it again, bobbled it one more time and finally gathered it in! Jon Kitna made smart choices and very few mistakes. Joey Galloway had some entertaining runbacks! Special Teams were incredibly special! It was SO much fun to be a Seahawks fan on Sunday!!

But not so fun if you're a Chiefs fan.

Dinner after the game was at Grandma's house. I put my victory smile away for a while, knowing Kansas City hearts were hurting. I couldn't put the good feeling away though! Inside I was jumping up and down!! Inside I was going over the play-off picture, just to make sure I knew what had to happen to give us our first playoff appearance in far too many years. Inside I was soooooo proud of our beloved Seahawks!!!

That's football.

And that's why I love this game.

Merry Christmas to all of you, and a Happy New Year too.
