Seattle Seahawks 21 - Indianapolis Colts 28

I didn't get to see it but I've been told that the play of the game is the Alex Bannister blocked punt that gave us the ball on the 1 yard line!! Itula Mili caught the 2 yard touchdown pass! Gooooo Seahawks!!!

Aaaaauuuugggghhhhh! This is the first year in many that I haven't been able to find the preseason games on satellite and it's killing me!!! What's happening??? If anyone out there saw the game and wants to share it with us, please tell us what happened!!!!

My friend Denis is AT the game in Indy and has promised a report when he gets home, so stay tuned for a first-hand account!

Meanwhile, I had a birthday party to attend this evening. Grandma has a computer at her house but it wasn't capable of getting the audio feed (boo-hoo!) so I wasn't able to pick up the game until I could sneak away! (Shame on me!)

I walked in the house here at home, ran to the computer, pulled up the audio feed and got here in time to hear Indy get a 94 yard punt return to pull ahead of the Seahawks! Oh, the pain!!!

On the next series (going from audio feed only so if someone saw the game and wants to add to the commentary, please do so!) Dilfer was sacked a couple of times, losing the ball once but apparently the play had been blown dead. We ended up with 4th and 29 at the 13 yard line.

We came up with a fumble recovery at the 40 yard line on the Colts' possession. Settles made the recovery. Ohhh, where's my roster?! Who is this Settles guy?!?! (Note: Tawambi Settles, FS from Duke.) Dilfer wasn't in as QB on this series, rather they put in Travis Brown. They said Brown took 3 snaps last year. Unfortunately he had a tipped pass intercepted allowing the Colts to eventually get a field goal to pull further ahead, 28/21 Colts with 6 minutes left.

There was a controversial grounding penalty called on Brown in the final quarter. There was a false start penalty, a dropped pass blamed on pressure by the defense, and a low pass. I haven't heard much that's positive but that's to be expected in the final quarter of a preseason game. We must have done some things right to get 21 points!

Warren Moon was working the sidelines during the game for a television station. Isn't it great to have him back in Seattle! When asked how Matt Hasselbeck played, he used the words "good job", "very well", and "good decisions". As I wasn't able to see or hear the game, that's all I have to go on. Your opinions?

I watched part of the Vikings game on television while I was at the birthday party. They showed the replay when Shawn Springs was injured. Does anyone know how serious the injury is?

Regardless of the score, doesn't it feel good to have NFL football back!?!? WA HOOOO!! I love it!!

From Seahawk Fan Pat in North Carolina:
I got to see the first half of the game and I think we looked pretty good.

Hasselbeck looked good, much to my relief. Darrell Jackson will be a major factor this year. I can see the effects of our beefed up O-line. They seemed to open up holes on endzone stands. I saw a Sinclair sack which made me feel really good. They are able to pressure the QB. Alex Bannister looks really good as well.

The satellite kept shifting so I didn't get to see some of the game (had to chase down the satellite dude, but I did see coverage from the 5 o'clock news in Seattle , a major fire somewhere in town).

Overall we looked a hell of a lot better than we did last year. Should be very exciting times ahead. Don't think Travis brown will make the roster.

From Seahawk Fan Denis in Indiana:
Here it is: And YES, I had fun!!!!

HELLO SEAHAWK FANS!!! Denis Knippenberg reporting to you from a BEAUTIFUL Sunday in August in Indianapolis, Indiana. The big story: SEAHAWKS. COLTS. PRESEASON. (singing... "It's the most glorious time... of the year!!")

So, where should I begin? I arrive in Indianapolis with my good friends (5 die hard Colt fans) for some good food and a little pre-game ribbing. There we were at Steak 'N Shake, 5 Colt jerseys.... and 1 Seahawk jersey! But, a fun time WAS had by all!!!

Now, for the game. It did not take me long to find a new favorite Seahawk. As the Colts were being introduced, John Randle had his helmet in his mouth (like a dog) and paced the sidelines liked a caged animal staring out at "the enemy". I will soon be buying a #93 jersey!!!

Please note that most of the review is about the first string. That is on purpose. I REALLY think that pre-season games should NOT have scoreboards.

OFFENSE:

We won the toss, so I got to see the offense right away.

THE GOOD: At very first Hasselbeck looked shaky (nerves?). But, he QUICKLY settled down and got into a rhythm. He used ALL of his receivers well (especially Ricky Watters and Christian Fauria). I think that Fauria is FINALLY going to have that year at tight end that we have been waiting for! Hasselbeck was given PLENTY of time to throw behind the offensive line. Ricky and Shaun Alexander both ran well. Ricky shows NO SIGNS of slowing down.

THE BAD: I know it is unfair to pick on a guy who has JUST joined the team and has been handed a 100 pound playbook and is expected to know it NOW, but Trent Dilfer.... Let's just say I think Hasselbeck had his first good night's sleep last night after watching Dilfer play knowing that he is SECURE in the #1 spot. Some rookie mistakes in the second half. Nothing worth talking about. A lot of silly procedure penalties on the second string offensive line.

THE UGLY: The offense actually moved BACKWARDS with Dilfer out there. Backup TE Itula Mili dropped a couple of VERY catchable balls at the wrong times.

THE DEFENSE:

THE GOOD: A LOT OF IT! During the first series, Randle, Eaton, Sinclair, and King lined up a different way on the defensive line EVERY SNAP. As a result, the Colts were disoriented on who to guard. Pressure on Manning was GREAT! Chad Brown looks REBORN!!! Levon Kirkland is the big run stopper in the middle we have needed for a LONG TIME. I predict a Pro Bowl for Chad Brown and John Randle. This defense is a great group of tacklers!

THE BAD: Cornerback Ike Charlon was picked on with great regularity. The second string defense STRUGGLED against the Colt's second stringers. Lots of missed tackles on the second unit.

THE UGLY: I was a NERVOUS WRECK when Shawn Springs went down grabbing his leg. Honestly, I was looking elsewhere so I did not see it happen. He seemed to be on the turf for HOURS. The longer he was on the turf, the SICKER I grew! Happily, I saw him stand on the sidelines later (Whew!). A hamstring injury is a lot better than a KNEE injury!

SPECIAL TEAMS:

THE GOOD: Write this name down: Kurtis Doerr. He is a rookie punter from Oregon. I sat behind his family during the game. He had some AMAZING punts! The Seahawks have GOT to sign this guy. Besides, Feagles is 37 (and from what I hear, a real JERK to other kickers). Sure, he is young, but THIS KID CAN KICK. If he doesn't sign here, I GUARANTEE HE WILL SIGN SOMEWHERE. Charlie Rogers looked good (no surprise). There was a punt block in the second half by the second stringers.

THE BAD: A punt return from the Colts was taken back for a touchdown, but it was second team stuff. I am unconcerned.

THE UGLY: Some big kick returns in the game by the first teamers that need to be rectified. I have faith, though.

OVERALL: Overall, I would say that I was VERY HAPPY with what I saw Saturday night. Now, ONE pre-season game does not a season make, but if this is any indication, we should see some nice improvement from the Seahawks this year. I am a lot more optimistic today than I was a week ago. Looks like these guys are headed in the right direction.

GO SEAHAWKS!!

Denis
