Port Adelaide V Richmond
AAMI Stadium Round 6

By Chris Greenway

The Victorian media carried virtually nothing about Port Adelaide and all the Richmond related media was completely focused on Greg Stafford. The big man picked up not one, but two video charges from the Hawthorn match. As anticipated the ruck clash with Peter Everitt had drawn the eyes of the investigators. Interestingly enough if Everitt had not been injured no one would have thought twice about the whole thing. At no point did Stafford take his eyes off the ball. The second charge was a kneeing charge on young Hawthorn player Stone. It looked pretty flimsy to me, Stafford slid into a contest and his knee connected with Stone's head. Total accident. The general consensus was even though Staff had done nothing illegal in the ruck duel with 'Spider' Everitt he would still be suspended because it was reckless. Some fast-talking and clever defence had Stafford acquitted from both charges, even though it was blatantly obvious that some members of the media believed he should have been suspended. It was hard to remember that we were even supposed to play Port Adelaide on Saturday night. The only other Richmond related news that I saw was a puff piece in Saturday's Sun that featured Richo and Rodan with their mothers. D-Rod's mum; Sala seems to find it hard to believe that her son turned out to be so good at Australian Rules Football. We were rank outsiders against Port and the first quarter started off that way. They kicked goals and we kicked points. We were 4 goals behind at the break and lucky that's all it was. Campbell had gone off with a calf injury and did not look likely to return. We had no marking target in the forward line and the midfield, including Rodan, was getting killed. We slowed it all down and frustrated Port in the second, we kicked a few and held them goalless. 11 points down at the half and right in it. Rodan was starting to use his speed and ball sense in the middle. The third quarter saw us take the lead briefly, before Port reasserted themselves. We were 17 points down, but not out of it yet. Rodan was continuing to annoy the hell out of the Port Adelaide midfield with his hard running, harassing play. In a hard fought last quarter Port's size on their forward line and our inability to finish off got them home by 27 points. Rodan worked hard, but never really imposed himself on the game. Stafford along with Newman, Hilton, Coughlan and Fiora were probably our best. We have to rebound hard and see if we can take Essendon out next week. It's an important game with Richo out for another week and probably Cambo as well. Be nice to clean up Essendon and then tackle Melbourne with an almost full list.
