Brisbane V Richmond
The Gabba Round 13

By Chris Greenway

Most of the media work had been done during the break so not a lot was written about this match up. Brisbane was expected to bounce back after recent losses and the best the Tigers could hope was to cause a massive upset. Brisbane was rapt that their captain, quiet possibly the best player in the game at the moment; Michael Voss was returning after a minor knee operation. The Tigers named Holland, back from a knee reconstruction, Dragicevic, back from his second knee reconstruction and Campbell. Despite continual assurances that he would play Campbell did not line up and was replaced by Chris Hyde. Rodan lined up in his usual forward pocket, but was switched onto Jason Akermanis in the unfamiliar role of tagger.

Richmond jumped out of the blocks and had Brisbane on the back foot with 3 goals, they should have had 5, but poor kicking wasted opportunities. Brisbane worked their way back into it during the second quarter and went into half time with a 17-point lead. Rodan wasn't doing badly on Akermanis, but it was obvious that he did not really know how to play as a tagger. Of course with him doing that there was only Andy Krakouer as a crumber and between Richo, Ottens and Stafford he did not know whose feet to camp under. We made some inroads early in the third quarter, but after Brisbane answered it the Tigers went into damage control. They had enough of the ball in the forward line in the last quarter to pinch the game, but a completely ineffective forward line wasted the opportunities.

I wish someone at the club would admit that the season is over, that we've wasted yet another one and they don't have a clue why we have the dumbest and most gutless list in the league. I apologize to Mark Chaffey, Andy Kellaway, Chris Newman and Ty Zantuck for the gutless comment, because not one of those four takes a backward step. Fleming is tough too, but still learning. Rodan had an ordinary game, if he wants to keep playing senior football he'll have to learn and learn quick. It's okay to get the ball and run away with it and kick the flashy goals in your first year, but when things get tough in year two you have to get even tougher. Rodan isn't doing that now. Next week the pain continues with a trip to Adelaide.
