Collingwood V Richmond
MCG Round 1

By Chris Greenway

A perfect night for football, about the only thing it was perfect for. If there had not been for the big hole where the Ponsford stand used to be this would have been a high scoring game. Collingwood had the yips early on and had trouble finding the goal, ominously for the Tigers so did Richo, although Ray Hall seemed to know where they were. It was a tough scrappy first half with Buckley and Woewodin shining out for the Pies and Cambo playing a real captain's game for the Tigers. When it came to the third quarter and the game was there to be won Collingwood were the ones who wanted to win it. Richo was still winning the ball, but missing the goals and many others, not Campbell, while they were able to get the ball seemed to have no idea what to do with it or who to give it to. This lack of direction for whatever reason is becoming a serious problem and I'm afraid it has to be laid squarely at the feet of the coach, if Spud doesn't fix it soon he won't last the season. We went down by 28 points and we were lucky that was all it was. Rodan didn't play much a hand in proceedings due to the inexplicable move of being played in the back pocket. Frawley's excuse was the late withdrawal of Duncan Kellaway. Sorry Danny, but that still doesn't make sense to me. You've got one of your big forwards with a long term injury, but you still command a tall forward line and you need crumbers. Your designated crumber; the mercurial Andrew Krakouer, is nursing a knee injury so you play one of your other crumbers in the backline, because your best tagger pulled out late? On one of the rare occasions that D-Rod was able to leave the back line he did one of those amazing things that only Rodan can do by handballing and then receiving his own disposal! Amazing! We lost by 5 goals and honestly if little David Rodan had been given a chance I reckon he could have kicked those off his own boot. Greg Miller stated before the game that Collingwood don't respect Richmond. He was partially right. Not one of the other 15 clubs respects Richmond and nor should they, because respect has to be earned and Richmond has done nothing to deserve that. There are about half of that playing list that need to lift and start playing football, because at the moment they're not only cheating their fans and supporters they're cheating themselves.
