June 9, 2007 - Salina, KS to Scott City, KS
Tresa did me a favor by arriving late enough for me to sleep in a bit before our drive out to Western Kansas. She was meeting up with a group of bicyclists in Scott City for her 3rd bike trip across Kansas. Better her than me, but I was happy to drive her out to meet up with the bunch!

Driving North out of Salina to I-70, we were surprised to still see major flooding around Salina. Many fields are still completely under water; all the rivers are still running high. May was a wet month, bringing us one substantial flood and at least 2 more after the first. It's early June and the effects are still very apparent.

I let Tresa navigate and she chose a route she was familiar with. We took I-70 to the Great Bend exit, then headed catawampus towards ... well, I didn't have the map so I really have no idea where we were. All I know is that we were on a two lane road with flat fields on either side of us! At one point we ran into construction when the road ahead of us abruptly ended with no advance notice. The construction detour cost us 30 miles - 15 back, then 15 to make up for backtracking - but hey, who cares? It's only time and we didn't exactly have any other plans. Most of the time things like detours or unexpected delays don't bother me - it's all part of the adventure. I'd prefer
the straight shot but I'm not going to get worked up about things beyond our control.
