Sept. 29, 2007 - San Francisco, CA I She took us to a little German restaurant where I had Sauerbraten - braised beef with cranberries, served with a very tart cooked cabbage and spaetzl. It was good but doesn't rank up there as one of the top meals I've ever had flavor-wise. Fun-wise, well, that's a different story! The young gal we met up with is very kind and outgoing and we laughed and laughed. Craig and Pat were drinking German beers and being goofy - trying to act all STIEGL and such – and that was outrageous fun! The restaurant was loud and lively so they could get by shouting STIEGL whenever the urge struck! It was REALLY fun. We took Karyn's friend back to her SF apartment after dinner and got to go inside. I wondered what the inside of those apartments, stacked side by side with imposing iron gates in front, looked like! I was thrilled to get a first hand look!
She unlocked the gate from the outside which opened up into a small area with two doors. One door was hers; the other door was for the upstairs occupants. Her apartment opened into a long hallway. The hallway was the only room that could be called a living room, but there was no room for furniture because it housed their bicycles and laundry baskets, and it also served as, well, a hallway! There were two bedrooms off the hallway for her roommates as well as a bathroom. At the end of the hallway was a small kitchen, and off the kitchen was a pantry that served as this |
