Interview with Dave Krieg

Eventually, of course, you went to Kansas City. Some people said you jumped, some said you were pushed. What was the story?

"That was difficult. Tom Flores came in and cleaned out the whole regime that we used to have. He called me up and put me on Plan B, which means basically you can shop around to other teams, see what you want. He said we might take you back, might not, we can't say, we don’t know. I said, 'So if you're saying you don't necessarily know if you want me, let me see what’s out there.' The Kansas City Chiefs were interested. They were our nemesis. We had a difficult time beating Kansas City in Kansas City. I went to Marty Schottenheimer, we had a ball control type offense, we ended up throwing the ball a lot, so our offense was pretty good."

The Chiefs went 10/6 that year and went to the playoffs where they were beaten by the Chargers. The next year Kansas City signed Joe Montana and automatically gave him the starter position. Joe Montana and Dave Krieg, the two older guys on the team, roomed together. That year Kansas City went to the AFC Championship.

Dave says, "It was quite a thing, I got to be around Marcus Allen, Joe Montana, Derrick Thomas, names like that, Dan Saleaumua. It was pretty cool. Good offensive line, some guys that actually went to Pro Bowl. We never had that in Seattle, never had an offensive linesmen go to the Pro Bowl when I was there."

"It was weird playing the Seahawks for the first time. Rufus Porter, Joe Nash, across the line, same guys I practiced with for the 12 years I was there, that was kind of weird. I'm glad we won every time we played the Seahawks."

After Kansas City, you still had the urge to play and compete. And obviously you stayed in demand for a number of years.

"I wanted to stay in Kansas City but they wanted me to compete for the backup quarterback position. My two year contract was up so I went to Detroit, they said 'Yeah, we’ll take you.' Scott Mitchell got hurt, I took over half way through the season, we went to playoffs again and lost to the Packers."

Are you still happy about the choice to keep on playing, even in a backup role, or do you now think you might have done some things a little differently?

"No, I would have liked to have stayed with one team. I think I would have stayed with Seattle or Kansas City, two great franchises, very traditional, very long-standing reputation as far as being pretty good organizations. It would have been easier on the family to not to move around that much. In retrospect, I kind of wish I'd have stayed in Kansas City. On the other side, I got to play with Barry Sanders in Detroit."

"Then I went to Chicago and then I went to Nashville for my last two years. Getting to go to Chicago was cool, getting to play in the division with the Packers. I always wanted to play for the Packers, and I asked them and asked them and asked them. After Kansas City, when I went to Detroit, when I went to Phoenix, when I went to Chicago, I always wanted to play for the Packers. But I played in the same division."
